Iranian independent photojournalist Yalda Moaiery was sentenced to 15 years in prison in August, with the conviction later upheld, after she photographed the U.S.-Israeli offensive and was accused of collaborating with foreign media. The case comes amid an intensified crackdown on journalism since the 2022 “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement, with at least 19 media professionals currently detained and a proposed law that would criminalize broader forms of cooperation with foreign media. Reporters Without Borders is urging Iran’s Guardian Council to reject the legislation, warning that its broad definitions of “collaboration” and espionage could further silence journalists and their sources.
