OTTAWA — World Press Freedom Canada (WPFC) is pleased to announce the election of Leslie Dickson as our new president following the 2026 annual general meeting.

Dickson is co-owner and publisher of The Hill Times, a longstanding independent news source covering federal Canadian politics, policy and the people in and around Parliament Hill.

She succeeds Heather Bakken, who will remain on our board of directors as past president after having served six years in the role.

Dickson, who joined the volunteer-run board at WPFC in 2023, took on more leadership responsibilities over the past year after being elected vice-president. She has been a key organizer for WPFC events, including our November 2025 symposium on the threats and opportunities that artificial intelligence brings to newsrooms, as well as our annual spring luncheon to mark World Press Freedom Day.

She brings a blend of passionate commitment, collegial decision-making and excellent organizational skills to her role of president of our Ottawa-based advocacy committee.

”Press freedom depends on legal protections, but it also depends on news organizations that can survive financially and stay independent,” Dickson said. “Keeping good journalism alive is essential to our democracy and something I believe deeply in.”

World Press Freedom Canada’s mission is to champion press freedom in Canada and around the world. We defend the rights of journalists to report the facts without fear or interference.

Dickson said she will make it her priority as WPFC president to build relationships and partnerships with people and groups who can support our mission, to raise WPFC’s profile across Canada and to build on our signature event and advocacy work.

Joining her on the WPFC executive is newly elected vice-president David Rodier, senior vice-president, corporate communications at Edelman. Rodier joined WPFC in 2009.

WPFC members extend our immense gratitude to Bakken, a partner and co-founder at the Pendulum Group, a communications and strategic advisory firm. She guided the committee through the pandemic years to the present.

Under Bakken’s inspiring leadership, WPFC grew the attendance at our annual luncheon; partnered with the diplomatic community to spotlight press freedom issues; expanded our advocacy presence on social media, and launched our monthly newsletter, Dispatch.

We would also like to thank Maeghan Ziebarth for her service as the committee’s treasurer. Ziebarth, a team leader at Welch LLP, provided valuable assistance in steering WPFC finances.
