Advocacy for Press Freedom
At World Press Freedom Canada, we are dedicated to advocating for stronger protections for journalists and media workers in legislation and in practice. We recognize the vital role that journalists play in upholding democracy, and we believe they must be able to work freely, without fear of retaliation, censorship, or harm.
In today’s complex political landscape and increasingly polarized societies around the world, the role of a free and robust media has never been more critical. From reporting on global conflicts to countering mis- and disinformation, and covering national debates, the media continue to play a central role in informing the public and fostering democratic dialogue.
The media’s responsibility to report facts is more important than ever, especially with the rise of AI-generated content, deep fakes, and the spread of misinformation and and disinformation across social media platforms. It is often trained journalists and media workers who are at the forefront, cutting through these distortions to provide the truth that the public needs to make informed decisions.
By championing the rights of the press, we are not just protecting those who report the news—we are defending the public’s right to access truthful, independent information, which is essential for a healthy democracy.
