World Press Freedom Canada joins with global media organizations in marking World News Day to highlight the role that journalists play in providing trustworthy news and information that serves citizens and democracy.
Democracy requires a free, fact-based and robust press but it is facing existential challenges at home and abroad.
In Canada, media business models continue to erode under the impact of social media and new threats from artificial-intelligence applications, while job losses and personal attacks on individual journalists weigh heavily.
In the United States and around the world, autocratic leaders issue threats and launch prosecutions and lawsuits against journalists and news companies that challenge their hegemony.
World News Day was founded by the Canadian Journalism Foundation and is now supported by the World Editors Forum and U.K.-based Project Kontinuum, which is a global network of media leaders who want to return journalism to its rightful place as an essential service – a key ingredient of democracy.
Their message for World News Day: “Choose Truth. Choose Facts. Choose Journalism.”
The World Press Freedom Canada committee encourages people to choose journalism and subscribe to a Canadian news provider.
