Tang Ho-wing, an independent journalist and founder of Boom News, was released on bail last month after Hong Kong police arrested him on suspicion of sedition and spreading disinformation under the city’s 2024 national security law.

The arrests followed coverage of an Aug. 31 gathering commemorating a 2019 clash between police and antigovernment protesters at Prince Edward station, where authorities denied allegations protesters had been killed.

International Federation of Journalists General Secretary Anthony Bellanger welcomed the release, but said it did not decrease the concerns around press freedom.

“The authorities must provide a clear explanation of the grounds for his arrest and ensure that any allegations against him are not used to restrict legitimate journalistic work,” Bellanger said. “The IFJ stands with the Hong Kong Journalists Association in defending the rights of journalists in Hong Kong, and urges the authorities to cease using criminal and other measures to restrict legitimate journalism.”
