Following the WPFC symposium, two of the panellists – the CBC’s Rignam Wangkhang and Nikita Roy of Newsroom Robots – convened a newly formed Canadian AI Journalism Alliance to keep the industry abreast of developments and best practices.
Some 40 media leaders, including newsroom managers, union officials and representatives of journalists’ organizations, gathered at CBC’s Toronto headquarters for an initial meeting and agreed to continue the effort. Subscribe to updates on Substack.
On Nov. 25, CBC;’s editor-in-chief Brodie Fenlon published the corporation’s guidelines on the use of artificial intelligence.
The essence is the policy: “Human oversight is mandatory: AI is a tool, never the creator.”
Final editorial judgment, fact-checking and accountability is the responsibility of CBC journalists and their senior managers; journalistic standards must be met; CBC will be transparent about any material AI use in its journalism, and the public will never have to question whether something CBC has produced is real or AI-generated.
